Friday Random Ten: Songs For Mama.

If you have a mom, are a mom, had one, are married to one or about to become one yourself, then you should appreciate this week’s lineup of songs.

And if not, then there’s a problem with you and/or possibly your mama. And yeah, I was talking about yo mama:

Mama Got Ass by Juvenile (blackink)

Song for Mama by Boyz II Men (Alisa)

Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns ‘N Roses (quadmoniker)

Stacy’s Mom by Fountains of Wayne (brokey)

Blueprint (My Momma Loves Me) by Jay-Z (R.A.B.)

All That I Got is You by Ghostface Killah (blackink)

Bitch by Meredith Brooks (quadmoniker)

Romulus by Sufjan Stevens (R.A.B.)

Mama Said Knock You Out by LL Cool J (quadmoniker)

Mother’s Day by 24-Carat Black (R.A.B.)

And because some of y’all just refuse to mind your mama, a bonus cut:

Mama Used to Say by Junior (Blackink)

His mama was right: take your time, young men and women. And live your life.

Be wonderful to each other. Especially the mamas.

Joel

Joel Anderson —blackink —  writes about sports, politics, crime, courts, and other issues far beyond his competence at BuzzFeed. He has worked at media outlets in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Atlanta and contributed to a number of publications, including The Root and The American Prospect, among many others.
  • No “Dear Mama” by Tupac? How about an honorary mention? Fun list by the way.

  • Grandma’s Hands by Bill Withers cause grandmas are mommas too. 😛

I never get tired of hearing that Junior jam.

  • R.A.B.

    No, because 2pac is ass.

    • blackink12

      Respect the dead, young’n.

  • R.A.B. I guess I cannot argue with such pithy, yet devastatingly accurate insight. A true poet you are. All jokes aside that did put a smile on my face. Still dig the song though and I don’t think Tupac is “ass” as you put it, but to each his own.

I couldn’t/didn’t include “Dear Mama” because it has this line: “Even though you was a crack fiend, mama/You always was a black queen, mama.”

That could totally be true. But it still sounds ridiculous.

      • I know women like that intimately blackink and it is indeed true. I’ve seen them go from being “crack fiends” to “black queens.” But hey, it’s your list, so I won’t protest. And please don’t get this west coast cat riled up…don’t wanna have to hit you with some WC and The Maad Circle…just joshin.’ Concrete runs through my veins, I swing from vines made from exposed power lines. BK stand up!!!

Man, I really need to get a job and stop messing around on the internet… :)

  • blackink

I was really hoping that exchange would kick off another East Coast-West Coast war. But on Monday, after we’re through brunching with our moms or whatever.

    • Y’all do those B? I’m down. I knew I loved this site for a reason! 😀

      Uptown baby!

  • R.

Speaking of talking about yo mama, how about ‘Ya Mama’ by the pharcyde, anyone? Also the Scissor Sister’s ‘Take Your Mama’ seems fitting.

  • I thank you all. ::bowing::
