Random Midday Hotness: Wait For It.

After reading the homie Frannie Kelley’s glowing review of the original cast soundtrack for Hamilton, the much-hyped hip-hop-meets-American-history musical by the newly minted genius Lin-Manuel Miranda, I decided to give it a listen.

Sigh.

So over the last few days, I have been banging this in the crib loudly — like, really, really loudly — and I’m wondering: is this how you musical theater/musical nerds feel all the time? I mean, this song, “Wait For It,” had me in my crib yell-singing and ALL IN MY FEELINGS like I was about to burst or some shit. And I couldn’t tell you why. My secret lover’s husband is not off fighting the British in Georgia, my grandfather was not a fire-and-brimstone preacher. (My mother is a genius, tho…)

I don’t know. It just seems so exhausting, you guys.

  • I can’t even deal with that last “I’M WILLING TO!” that goes right into the super-quiet, “…wait for it.” All I want in the world is to sing “WAIT FOR IT” really loudly right there, but Aaron Burr would have never. Lin-Manuel is just…fuck, man.

Right, like you get the sense that this is a cat who doesn’t show a whole lot and mostly watches what’s going on. And on the last “…wait for it,” it’s like he’s catching himself.

      • 100%

The layers that LMM puts into this thing (did you catch yet that the scales Eliza plays with Philip on the piano are the same notes from Ten Duel Commandments? JUST ONE EXAMPLE) are bananas.

Or the pianos in “Cabinet Battle #1,” which are a nod to Nas’s “If I Ruled The World”?

          Dis tew much.

          • All of it. All of it is too too tooooooo much. In the best possible ways.

Yes. This is how we feel all the time. I mean, every once in awhile there is a cast album that is a dud, but overall – the first chord strikes and the hairs stand up on my arms and I’m a goner.
