Sarah Palin is the Prey for Barack Obama's Wolves.

New McCain Ad:

It’s a good thing Gov. Palin believes shooting wolves from airplanes is great sport.

[Via TPM.]

UPDATE: FactCheck.org says that the McCain camp distorted what they actually said.

A McCain-Palin ad has FactCheck.org calling Obama’s attacks on Palin “absolutely false” and “misleading.” That’s what we said, but it wasn’t about Obama.

Our article criticized anonymous e-mail falsehoods and bogus claims about Palin posted around the Internet. We have no evidence that any of the claims we found to be false came from the Obama campaign.

The McCain-Palin ad also twists a quote from a Wall Street Journal columnist. He said the Obama camp had sent a team to Alaska to “dig into her record and background.” The ad quotes the WSJ as saying the team was sent to “dig dirt.”

Update, Sept. 10: Furthermore, the Obama campaign insists that no researchers have been sent to Alaska and that the Journal owes them a correction.

We don’t object to people reprinting our articles. In fact, our copyright policy encourages it. But we’ve also asked that “the editorial integrity of the article be preserved” and told those who use our items that “you should not edit the original in such a way as to alter the message.”

UPDATE #2: DNC research director Michael Gehrke responds to claims that a mini-army descended on Alaska after Palin was picked.

Sadly, I don’t have 30 lawyers, researchers, investigators or even wolves at my disposal. We have sent a grand total of zero people to Alaska to research Governor Palin. We’ve got all these McCain houses to keep track of.

I’ve always said that if we’re going to ignore the issues, at least do it with a bit of cattiness, not mock outrage. My favorite part is the implication that he wishes he did have 30 wolves at his disposal.

UGH. The most outrageous thing about this is how steadfastly he has refused to attack her.

This election is turning into a surreal experience.

my question is, where is biden? i’m with qm- there’s trying to stay above the fray, and then there’s turning the other cheek to the point where you wind up in the hospital without ever having put up a fight. it’s a given that as soon as obama himself comes out with anything even slightly resembling the kind of tactics the mccain camp is using he’ll be attacked, but doesn’t his own vp candidate have a role to play here?

All candidates distort both their own record and that of their opponents. They do it directly via what they say and indirectly via what they don’t say. Why do folks act like this is something new?

  • Scott, can you give me some examples of Obama distorting McCain’s or Palin’s record?

  • scott

Since I don’t have a record of everything Obama has said about McCain and Palin I obliviously can’t. My comment is a general one aimed at all politicians. Do you really believe any politician is above distorting either their own record or the record of their opponents for political gain?

  • verdeluz

    A+ typo.. ha.

  • I don’t have a record of everything McCain has said about Obama, but I know he has frequently distorted Obama’s stance on taxes and sex education in schools, and his surrogates have distorted Obama’s stance on abortion.

I can’t think of any examples in which Obama has distorted McCain’s record or stance, so I was hoping you had some examples that I had missed.

And to answer your question, I don’t think we need to deal in hypotheticals when we have an election going on right in front of us with real politicians making real statements and real ads. I’m not interested in talking about what “any politician” would do. I’m interested in talking about what the politicians running for president are doing right now.

Okay, here ya go. Obama has touted his record of working in a bi-partisan fashion and on tough issues. When in reality his record in the Illinois Senate has him skipping tough votes. Clearly he has distorted his own record, just like any other politician.

    Scott:
Here are some examples of Obama stretching the truth: He claimed incomes fell by $2,000 during Bush’s tenure. That’s true only for working couples. If you add retired people, they actually marginally climbed. But his overall point, that incomes grew much faster under Clinton, by about $6,000 according to most measures, is true.

Obama claimed John McCain said the line between middle class and rich was $5 million annually. Though McCain said that, it was a joke.

That’s it, Obama has stretched the truth and streamlined his narrative, as all politicians do. The primary difference here, though, is that the claims are grounded in truth. Obama could make a good argument that measuring working adults’ incomes is more realistic, or that only an obscenely rich person would think the $5 million joke is funny.

McCain’s camp is making statements that are demonstrably false, that they KNOW are false. The ‘thanks but no thanks’ to the bridge to nowhere implies Alaska didn’t keep the money when, in fact, they did; according to independent analysts, Obama’s tax plan would cut, NOT raise, taxes on middle-income families, about 95 percent of those with children, by about $2,200 while McCain’s would cut them by $1,400; Obama did not support sex education for young students but supported a program that would warn them about predatory behavior by adults, which many states have; and there is no evidence Obama has had anything to do with any of the smears against Palin, he has instead steadfastly refused to say much about her.

Factcheck.org called McCain’s commercials about Obama’s tax plan a disturbing pattern of lying. Misrepresenting an opponent’s stance is common, but having independent organizations calling a candidate a liar outright is pretty damn new. And all of it was a far cry from the honorable candidate McCain was eight years ago. And, frankly, non of it is very Maverick-y.

  • Her use of wolves in this add is atrocious, especially considering her effort to increase the aerial hunting of wolves.
