The Carnivore's Dilemma.

Seems like most of my regular readers don’t eat red meat (and presumably pork). That’s one of the black people things that I’ll never get. I respect people who eat what they feel is right for them — my sis is a vegetarian and my dad doesn’t eat red meat or pork — but I’m a full-on omnivore. You saw what I’ve eaten out of the Omnivore’s 100.

What is it about black folk and not eating red meat or swine? It’s not just religious — and I realize there are health benefits to cutting back meat consumption (as well as environmental benefits). Chicken has it’s problems, too. And too much fish exposes you to mercury. Too much of anything is bad.

As for yours truly, I love salad and veggies. I enjoy a good meatless meal. One of my fave quick dishes is white beans, diced tomatoes, onions, and garlic simmered in some chicken stock or water. I’m a big believer in variety, and I don’t eat meat every day. But it’s so good! Kobe beef! Sooooooo good! Why are you people denying yourselves of so many yummy possibilities??

As a side note: I’m terrified of reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma, though I hear it’s well done, and I’ve heard the author talk about food in an interesting way. It’s easy to ignore the moral issues of caged chickens and stuffing cows with government subsidized corn, when you’re starving. (I did vote Yes on 2.)

(BTW, does this red meat ban extend to goat? Because I’m going home to some slow-cooker curry goat. Mmm!)

Well, aside form the obvious health benefits, I think some of it has to do with wanting to distance oneself from ‘slave’ food and a kind of ‘I’m not the Negro you think I am.’ There’s an element of classicism to the abstinence sometimes as well. An anti-rib tip alliance of sorts.

I? Love bacon. I love steak. I eat meat sparingly and (as often as possible) in its grass fed, free range, organic form. I love it. Pass the jerky.

    shani-o! read it!
you’ll be fine. I read it and i’m still eating meat it’ll just bring you a wider awareness and funny enough not stop you meat consumption so much as give you pause in things corn syrup…which apparently is in everything.
If you read it with a pragmatic non-extreme view of food, which you don’t seem to have. You’ll be fine.
