I completely overlooked this while being swept up in the Obama afterglow, but Kevin Johnson was elected the mayor of Sacramento. I don’t know too much about his policy positions yet, so I’ll stay quiet on that. For what it’s worth, he’s always been a stand-up dude.
But I need to shout out dude for being one of the illest point guards to ever play ball. It always bugs me that Nash is considered one of the 10 best PG’s of all time. Don’t get it twisted: he’s definitely up there somewhere, but he’s not even the best point guard to ever play for the Suns. KJ doesn’t get the props he deserves, which is amazing given his stats: he averaged 20 and 10 from 1988 through 1992, and would put up comparable numbers a few more time after that. (He only made the All-Star Team three times, which is sort of mind-boggling. Am I forgetting someone? I know Stockton was there in the West every year, but what other PG was making the team and keeping KJ off?)
There was a point in the mid-90s when he was absolutely unguardable. His handle was crazy. He was fast as hell, and his jump shot was automatic. And for a little dude, he could really get up. That dunk on Olajuwon in the playoffs is still the craziest jawn I’ve ever seen — it came completely out of nowhere.
