Mad Men in CP Time: The Cuban Missile Crisis and A Prose Poem to a Potato Chip.

So happy to see that Duck’s “uppance shall come”. I literally clapped my hands I was so glad.

Oh Pete…you know, for some reason I don’t dislike Pete. He’s annoying and obsequious and calculating but I still can’t hate him. I actually felt bad for him in this episode. Can’t say I see much point to him staying with Trudy.

My mind snagged on the scene with Betty and the guy in the bathroom. I was thinking about the similarity of it to the scene of Joan’s rape…the shifting of garters and hose, and fumbling with underwear. The scene with Joan was deeply disturbing because of its violence but this was disturbing to me too. Here’s Betty cheating (finally!) and it seems futile somehow…there doesn’t seem to be any release that comes from it. I find that I’m very curious about who Betty was before her marriage. Don said to the ex-Mrs. Draper that he loved to listen to her laugh – I’m having a hard time imagining her being unselfconsciously happy. We all know Don has identity issues but Betty seems even more mixed up than him sometimes. Who is she really? I don’t think she even knows.

Thank UE. i didn’t catch that similarity, but now that you’ve mentioned it, wow. There was a definite parallel between the two scenes.

Lack of passion would be the initial similarity for me as well. I was more exasperated with betty at this point i feel because of the length of time and indecision that she was being more petulant with her behavior. She’s not acting she’s reacting and it’s delayed, it’s disappointing. Strangely i wanted more from her even in her infidelity, more decisiveness, more direction. She’s been doing alot of soul searching and it’s still amounting to reacting to whatever is put in front of her.

I dislike Pete, he’s still immature. (just one episode ago he threw a turkey out a window) He’s also a disappointment still lacks an inner moral compass and wants to please whoever he sets up as his hero.

I was SO happy with Peggy. It was quite satisfying to finally find out where the baby is and for her to unload that burden, it was a bit cruel to Pete in the advent but it needed to be done. As for the Father i think he came to a realization himself with Peggy of how entrenched he really is in his religion by his efforts to get Peggy to confess…well she did confess and to the right person i think.

I asked him if Peggy’s sister is raising Peggy’s baby, and he said, no, that is not the case. Peggy’s sister was pregnant when Peggy had her baby, and the sister gave birth around the same time. Her youngest child is her own child; the sister is not raising Peggy’s offspring.

Again, just to be clear: Peggy’s baby is not being raised by her sister. That child was given up for adoption.

I love this show.

My favorite little detail was that Don was the only one that noticed Peggy got a haircut. They really are soulmates.
