Is He an Elitist?

A reader writes to Jonathan Martin:

I still can’t figure out what “elitist” means and whether or not I’m elitist. I’m 6th gen American, my father was wounded on Iwo, my grandfather in WWI, my GG in the Civil War. Neither parent graduated from high school. Grew up blue collar, paid my way through school with masters degree. I read books about history and foreign policy and listen to NPR. BUt I also lived in a trailer home in Alaska and have hunted moose. I live in a red state (Montana) but voting for Obama. I own guns and have a friend who is gay. Can’t stand Pailin, think she is scary for our country. I have a white collar job. I drink beer not cocktails, but only craft micro beers not Bud in a can. Can someone clarify whether I’m elitist or not and what the criteria are to be one? Thanks in advance.

    Elitist, you went to college.

  • I think it matters whether or not he does any of those things from his gut.

There’s a flaw in his beer dichotomy: Bud isn’t American any longer, so now it’s elitist.

    Wait.. cocktails are elitist?

Or only if I drink them with my pinky in the air?

No, I just think you are a human being with tastes and choices that suit you.
