Late Pass: Mad Men.

On a whim about a month ago, I started watching AMC’s Mad Men on iTunes. It’s not TheGreatestShowEverOMGWhyAren’tYouWatchingThis like another show I could mention, but it’s pretty damn fun. The suits are dope,* the acting is first-rate and  Peggy Olson is one of the best female characters a TV drama has produced. We should probably start blogging about it. (Also, Christina Hendricks. The mind reels.)

Here’s a question for fans of the show: is January Jones, aka Betty Draper, a good actress playing an annoying character, or just a bad actress?

*shani-o put me on How I Met Your Mother, which is also a lot of fun, and which often boasts Neil Patrick Harris in some snazzy suits. It’s funny how you notice stuff like this as you get older.

  • Re: January Jones. At first I thought the latter but the last 3-4 episodes, she has really stepped up her game and is a serious Emmy threat

  • I started watching a few weeks ago. Saw season 1 on DVD and caught season 2 on iTunes. It’s definitely one of my favorite new shows. I think I like all of the characters more this season. All the women annoyed me in the first season — Peggy the least. But this season they’ve all stepped up their game. Though I’d love to see a fight between Joan and Jane. Go Joan!

  • G.D.- are you ever gonna give me back my HIMYM dvds?

  • I watched one episode and was hooked. Over the past 2 weeks I’ve watched season 1 and all of season 2 that has come out so far. I’m now impatiently awaiting episode 11.
I have no self control. :-(
I needed something to take the place of The Wire, and while this does not completely heal my broken heart, it helps.
G.D. I love Peggy and obviously Don but I find the person I have really been trying to figure out lately is Pete. He intrigues me in his dysfunction. I’m waiting to see if he is simply as gasping affected asshole or there’s something else under all that.
As for January…I can’t decide if I like her or Betty. I like that her character has gotten some more backbone lately, but she always seems so wooden. But then again, that’s probably how Betty Draper is supposed to be as opposed to January’s acting being bad. I do itch to see her just *explode* though.

It’s not The Wire, but like The Wire it completely overshadows everything else currently on TV. I follow a few network shows, but Mad Men is the only one I really want to watch.

    welcome

  • I haven’t felt compelled to give this show a watch. But you mentioned Christina Hendricks. Remembering her original and reprised role in Firefly, I may have to take a look. Red hair and hourglass figure… the mind reels indeed!

    Love. This. Show.

January Jones is a great actress playing a complicated character. I was surprised she didn’t get an Emmy nod.

Also, I noticed in the above pic that Peggy’s a blonde. In the show, she’s only ever been a brunette. Hmmm…

  • OMG, is that Connor from Angel on the far right??

  • ARGH!!!!!!

Shani. I’ve been trying to figure out where I knew that dude from for the LONGEST. you’re right!

I don’t know whether to be satisfied that i know the answer or mad that I didn’t figure it out.

    *bodies self*

  • Aw, poor baby. I only recognized him because I just finished watching Season 5. I’m glad to see that he’s working!
