Forever Playing Catch-Up.

The moderators for the presidential debates were announced last week by the Commission on Presidential Debates, and, surprise, surprise, the moderators are three aged white men:

Jim Lehrer, Tom Brokaw, and Bob Schieffer.

Gwen Ifill, who moderated the VP debate in ’04, has been tapped to moderate it again this year.

NPR’s Michel Martin took a few moments to discuss the absurdity myopia of the decision:

You cannot tell me that race and age do not matter in year where race and age are the two issues people bring up when they talk about how they’re going to vote and why. Think about it: if the commission had picked three 40-something African Americans to moderate all three debates, do you think somebody would say, ‘Gee, is that fair to John McCain?’

Of course, the CPD’s executive director Janet Brown said the moderators were picked based on their years of experience. Martin goes on to list several journalists who could fill that description, but who also happen to be women or people of color. While she doesn’t blame the commission for eschewing women or people of color because they’re women or people of color, she does make a good point:

I think they made the all too typical mistake of seeing white men as the universal citizen, the standard by which everybody else must be judged, without recognizing that they, too, have a perspective, a life history, a worldview.

This is what frustrates me: just as white women are the baseline for womanhood, white men are the baseline for humanity, and we’re all supposed to try our best to get on their level. Nevermind that Ifill kicked ass as the VP moderator four years ago, and, if anything, “proved” herself to be an impartial, firm, and thoughtful questioner. What more do they need? And the ‘they’ in question is a relatively diverse board, which is another reason why the choices are so perplexing.

How long will it be until women and/or people of color attain the requisite experience and gravitas to question the men and women applying to lead one the world’s most diverse nations? Will we forever be answering to white men, even as their population shrinks?

Q: How long will it be until women and/or people of color attain the requisite experience and gravitas to question the men and women applying to lead one the world’s most diverse nations?

A: For as long as women and people of colour can be counted on to go along with the status quo.

  • A: For as long as women and people of colour can be counted on to go along with the status quo.

LH: By this do you mean to say that is somehow the fault of women and people of colour that they don’t get selected???

  • LH

UE: No, but as long as whites are doing the selecting, I don’t anticipate being surprised by who’s selected. Do you?

Moreover, aside from being pissed off, what are the women and the people of colour prepared to do about being marginalised again?

  • One way we can stand up is to boycott anything…manufacturers, tv, anything that we spend our money on…that refuses to recognize that women and non-whites exist. People always seem to respond when hit hard in the pockets. Spend your money wisely. And don’t be afraid to point these blatant oversights out to anyone you know…non-white or white. A lot of people may agree with you if you open up their minds to a new way of thinking. Go forth people!

  • That’s definitely a good idea BeeK, but i think most people nowadays are comfortable and too set in their lifestyles to make a significant change.

  • LH: But whites aren’t the only ones doing the selecting. That’s not to say I disagree with your point about accepting the status quo, however. And I don’t know that anyone is pissed off or surprised by this. It’s just rather tiring.

BeeK: How do you think boycotting will impact who’s selected to moderate the presidential debates?

  • LH

Shani-o: Excellent point about whites not being the only ones doing the selecting.

I don’t know, though, how tiring it could be if it’s 2008 and people aren’t doing more. Think about all of the journalists and pundits who are of colour and women. Why aren’t they hosting the presidential debates?

  • The obvious problem with the “years of experience” explanation is that duh, women and people of color weren’t *allowed* to be anchors back in the day. Gwen Ifil (and for that matter, my boyfriend Ray Suarez) would be awesome moderators, imho.

That said, the three they chose are pretty decent, I think. Although Brokaw, meh.
