#32: #GrowingUpSouthern.

G.D. and Terryn discuss his recent reporting for NPR’s Code Switch on the Confederate flag — the black folks who side-eye the flag but don’t really care too much and the white folks who make the argument that the flag is about heritage. Terryn breaks down what well-meaning Northerners (like G.D.) don’t get about the South. She also references Walker, Texas Ranger at least once.

If you’re a Southerner — especially a Southerner of color —  we want to know what you think we got right and what we got wrong. And for everybody, what cultural objects do you bang with that the wider world sees as janky? We want to hear from you in the comments.

Hey folks…. grew up in Baltimore. Lived thirty years in Florida. Can accept the flag as a historical artifact but it belongs in a museum. In rural Florida it is “THE symbol” for redneck cracker racists. Pickup truck, hat, jacket, used as a sign of flaunted racism.
