In all seriousness, I find it both adorable and baffling when white people discover the reality of racial prejudice. Adorable, because, c’mon—it’s not hard to find someone who voices racist ideas or conceptions about the world.
Baffling because, we’re hardly removed from the era of apartheid and state sanctioned racial discrimination, both in the United States and abroad. Combine that with the human ethnocentrism, and it’s silly to think that these kind of attitudes are rare or uncommon. They’re not. At all.
And, it should be said that I’m always amused when a European—of all people—chastizes Americans about racism. Say what you will about the United States, we do a better job of acknowledging and discussing racial prejudice than the people of any other developed country. That we don’t do a particularly good job is a sign of how bad the situation is every where else.
