Humpday Hate: Maty Soul is Back! Again!

You know what that means: time for another rousing game of Cultural Appropriation Bingo!

If you’re a frequenter of this site, then you remember Maty Soul.  She’s the French “soul” warbler singer who gave us the unbelievably stereotypical, wholly confusing song and video “Herbal Tea.”  And if you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably gotten Maty Soul’d a time or two (that’s where I promise scantily clad pictures of myself, then link to Maty’s video), and i’ll apologize for that, but I won’t mean it because it gives me such joy.

Anyway, for better or worse, we FINALLY have another full Maty Soul video!  It’s called “In My Village,” and if you’re rolling your eyes already, congratulations!  Your Bullshit Detector is working perfectly.

In this video, Maty has decided that it’s not enough for her to sit singing Lauryn Hill songs in a subway swaddled in the colors of the Pan-African flag.  She goes directly to an ethnic ass village and claims it as her own.  Colonialism got soul.

Let’s play game of “spot the stereotypes” as a class again, shall we?  I’ll start us off with a few:

  • Kangol + Rasta colored neo-soul scarf = totally conscious, dude!
  • Black people on the corner with a boom box.  Of course.
  • SHE’S IN FUCKING AFRICA OR SOMETHING.

Your turn!

(And in case you’re wondering, she’s still drinking that herbal tea.)

I almost find this more shockingly offensive than the “Give Me Your Cash Bitch” campaian ad above. Also, it frightened my cat.

    • LOL.

what’s wild about Maty Soul’s videos so far is that they actually boast pretty decent production values. someone is bankrolling her delusion.

our Maty Soul, always on the cutting edge…

seems like Maty is the first resident in an early wave of hip, french artists trying to gentrify this rural, majority black mountain village — Or is it called colonization when you need to fly to another country to find a “‘place to stay?”

big ups to french artists visualizing themselves getting props from locals, instead of showing locals enjoying their own musical styles and or maybe the local musicians whose style she is probably borrowing from. neither of which have representation in her video.

actually the town itself has no attribution, is it in the French Caribbean? Spanish Caribbean? English Caribbean? in South America? a remote all black village in the French Alps?

oh, and bamboo earrings on a white artists doing black music is the new ironic hipster wearing a 1998 Chagrin Falls volleyball team t-shirt. iamlookingatyoukreashawn.
