Random Midday Hotness: War.

If you walk around NYC long enough, you’ll eventually run into the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a group of young brothers from Chicago,* just killing it on random corners and in subway stations.

I’ve been a fan for a minute, and on Tuesday quadmoniker and I got to see them play a private gig to promote a forthcoming documentary on the band. (Their backstory is rather bizarre.)  They’re really cool, friendly cats, but they couldn’t stick around long: they had to hop a flight to do some dates in Johannesburg.

*Literally; seven of the eight bandmembers share the same father.

I always assumed they were from New Orleans.

I’m glad NYC gets to hear these dudes. I used to hear them in Downtown Chicago in random places and times just grooving. Sometimes I’d catch them during a mid-day lunchbreak. Other times, a late Saturday morning welcoming people to the area to get some shopping done at the fine retailers.
