Friday Random/Genius Ten.

While I was cleaning, I set my ITunes to Genius based on “Don’t Disturb This Groove,” by The System. The playlist started up sort of chill and midtempo before veering decidedly into rainy-day-sex territory. Perhaps the universe is trying to tell me something.

1. The Dramatics – “Whatcha See Is What You Get,” from Whatcha See is What You Get.

2. Cree Summer ft. Lenny Kravitz – “Mean Sleep,” from Street Faerie.

3. The Emotions- “Don’t Ask My Neighbors,” from The Emotions.

4. Nikka Costa, “Push and Pull,” from Everybody’s Got Their Something.

5. The Isley Brothers, “For the Love of You,” from The Heat Is On.

6. Me’Shell Ndegeocello, “Priorities 1-6,” from Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape.

7. Minnie Ripperton, “Inside My Love,” from Adventures in Paradise.

8. Roberta Flack, “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” from Feel Like Makin’ Love.

9. Patrice Rushen, “Settle for My Love,” from Pizzazz.

10. John Legend, “Save Room,” from Once Again.

    19. Black Milk – “Give The Drummer Some” (Fat Beats)*
    20. Jadakiss f/ Lil Wayne – “Death Wish” (Def Jam)

  • Dammit, Louis. “Pop Champagne” is gonna be in my head all day.

Also, The Roots’ “Get Busy” is a great workout song.

  • Cree Summer? Freddie from “Different World”? She’s a singer?

  • blackink: Yeah. She put out an album in the late 90s, but it didn’t make a hell of a lot of noise. (And maybe rightly so; it’s only just okay.) I think she has the prototypical soul-rock voice, all raspy and sexy and attitudey. (Just check out her crazy voice credits on IMDB.)

Interestingly enough, Van Hunt co-wrote “Mean Sleep”, and he and Nikka Costa covered it later on one of his album. Their version sucks.

  • Good stuff. I’d heard she’d been doing some voice work over the past few years. But I had no clue that she’d actually cut an album.

Between Cree and Jasmine Guy, all “Different World” needed was Dawnn Lewis to put together a little chitlin-circuit trio.

  • Heh. I think Dawnn Lewis has a songwriting Grammy, but don’t quote me on that.
