    Did you read the stellar New Yorker profile on him from last year? GQ (or Esquire, I can’t remember) had a pretty long profile of him this year, and judging from the histrionic letter to the editor that ran in the next issue, he was not a fan of the piece.

    Besides his educational pedigree, I’m really not sure why so many people like him so much (upper-SES, highly-educated people at least). He’s the un-Obama.

    blackink, the real question is what is there to like? He’s ok and I know we all like to support educated brothers and all, but he in no way deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as guys like Obama or Harold Ford Jr. In fact, it’s almost a racist slight to Barack et al to do so. Besides his lack of actual accomplishments and the fact that despite all the promises of hope and change, Newark may actually have gotten worse during his tenure in many respects, he’s just a very annoying politician. He recycles the same jokes, puns, anecdotes, and insincere self-effacing humor in all his speeches and public appearances, with only slight variations depending on whether he’s addressing a white ivy league audience (who tend to be head over heals in love with him) or more skeptical Newark residents. At the very least, those other new wave “black” (in quotes for a reason) politicians have polish, charisma and gravitas that this man may sadly never acquire.

    I’m still afraid to watch “Street Fight” because I’ve heard that it’s amazingly biased and unbalanced booker-cheerleading and doesn’t even discuss the fact that people in the community opposed him for substantive grounds too (i.e. his position on vouchers, etc.)

    But I’m tired and grouchy right now– maybe I’ll feel differently tomorrow…

  • Young: Harold Ford, Jr.? Really? Ford was on the wrong side of any number of issues (he was pretty gung ho about the marriage amendment, the war in Iraq and he voted FOR that horrible bankruptcy bill), and is/was generally a pretty conservative cat.

    You’re right G.D.– Ford has taken some problematic positions and putting him in the same sentence as Barack is also ridiculous. I’m mad at myself for having done so… guess I’ve been more subliminally brainwashed by all the “post-racial”, “new black leadership” talk than I had realized. However, for what it’s worth, I will say that Ford has been impressive on other issues, has sounded particularly impressive post-Congress and clearly has a polish/charisma/gravitas that Booker lacks.

    By the way, I’m new here and want to give you all props on running such an interesting blogsite.

  • Young: which issues do you think Ford has been impressive or out front on? he’s a pretty run-of-the-mill center-right Democrat.

    Just watched ‘Street Fight’ last night, and it doesn’t take any great pains to be unbiased. Still, was a nakedly ambitious Cory Booker worse for Newark than having the deeply corrupt Sharpe James running the city with unchecked power?

    the thing about Street Fight is the director set out to make a documentary about the election, but the rambo style totalitarian sharpe gang made that basically impossible. so yeah, it turned into a booker doc, mostly by default and then probably by preference.
