Song of the Day/Night.

The first hip-hop album I ever fell in love with was Midnight Marauders. It was the fall/winter of 1993, I was in the eighth grade, and I played the cassette every day for the next few months. It finally cracked from the overplaying on March 23, 1994 — the day my grandmother died. Their last album came out during my college years, which made Tribe the sonic bookends to my adolescence, and they continue to inhabit a special place in my heart.

Okay, enough with the navel-gazing. This is “Gettin’ Up” from Tip’s forthcoming album.

  • I know the feeling. I really, really fell in love with hip-hop when I first had a listen to the “Low End Theory.” There’s never really been any group that did it like ATCQ.

Oh snap. How high is that on the terrible, horrible, no good very bad day list?
