The Trailer Is Wack. The Movie Is Not.

It does the whole ‘magical people of color’ bit, which I recognize is problematic. But the pacing is great , the script is really smart, and the four leads give flawless performances. Furthermore, it’s the second feature by Tom McCarthy, who helmed The Station Agent and was last seen making up stories as Scott Templeton on The Wire.

Also, apropos of nothing, Danai Gurira look good. (Racialicious agrees.)

You’re damn sure right about “the whole magical people of color bit” and the trailer SUCKING ASS. I’m going to take your word on it and give up the two hours of my life, but if i feel half as peeved as i do know i’m coming back to you homie!

  • trust me on this, homie.

BTW…i peeped you in the Voice last week. I wanted to blog about that, particularly the “she’s not REALLY African-American’ quote that dude gave.

    Thanx G.

I would love it if you did a post on the story (me excluded). I think it’s an important issue that needs to get attention. Soho Alliance director Sean Sweeney is amazing to me in the way he can say such stupid things to a REPORTER ON THE RECORD in such a media savvy world. My favorite quote was this one though “I don’t think you need a martini to go with chitlins and collard greens. What wine goes with jambalaya? I can’t think of one”

She left one of the best parts of the story out though. How when they first found out the restaurant was coming, they put up neon signs that read if you don’t want Soho to turn into Harlem you’ll stop Lola’s from opening here.

P.S. Neither Jambalaya or CHITLINS are on the menu.

!!!!…THAT’S What Happened!? I took me a moment to realize the Lola you were referring to.
I remember when construcytion started…years ago literally and walked by the other day and realized it was open, had no idea what was going on seemed like the longest restaurant opening ever.

oh wait …ok i’m rreading tyhe article. G.D please do this.PLEASE.

I’ve heard good things about the film. I might go check it out.

re: the Lola situation, I’ll find that article in the post. I’ve heard of the tomfoolery going on concerning getting it shut down, and its disappointing to say the least.

  • Ooh, thank you for saying that. That was my one reservation about seeing it, actually.

  • i’ll check it out.
