I finally was able to sit through an entire movie, "Meet the Browns". As a black man I always offended by his movies. Am I the only one that notices that the "bad" guy that the heroine has left is a dark skinned man and her "prince charming" has the "classic light skinned good looks".

There was an interesting article in a UK magazine called Pride that discussed why no black american movies are imported overseas anymore. I love watching black films and look forward to when they come over here; the article mentioned that despite Perry's success, his films have not been imported over here. I personally think what Perry is doing is great but he doesn't necessarily structure his work like Bertolt Brecht but who cares ? Not all movies have to be overly intellectually stimulating

I also wanted to point out that after watching why did I get married that a woman needs to play a traditional role to be a good woman.

I don't have a critical eye for film. Just wanted to put that out there. I've only seen the two films sans Madea. What I don't get is why the women have to do the changing and deep soul searching? But I love the cliche cuteness of the the two films i've seen. Hot black men help too.

I'm glad you gave "critical analysis" of the films. Many who diss him haven't even seen them, they just hate the premise. I've been beefing with family members about TP since his plays became popular. My mother in law brought some bootlegs to our house on a visit back around 2002 and the Madea character disgusted me. I have a problem with his imagery of Black women. Either we are victims who need rescuing or we are drama and someone needs to be rescued from us. I personally don't think he likes women and I don't mean that as a gay crack. I mean I think that he honestly, somewhere in his subconscious, doesn't LIKE women. Some of his stuff is just mean, but I won't get to blogging on your blog about TP :0)

I agree with Big Word. I'm not a Perry fan, but I'm also not mad at his hustle.

The only film of his I liked was "Daddy's Little Girls" (I've been rolling with Gabby Union since like, "She's All That") -- the beatdown scene to Sam Cooke was awesome.

I saw "Diary" and found it difficult to watch.

LH: I don't think Perry gets the suppport he does because he's black. He just knows how to cater to certain demographic. The buppie neo-soulers and gangtsters get all the attention when it comes to black culture and the movie business. You can't get those types of message films that talk about all the things being experienced by church-going black folk. At least not from their perspective anyway. So he's found a nice little niche with that baudy humor and more importantly a message that seems to resonate. I ain't mad at him.

This would really sound like cleverly crafted haterism, if it weren't so damn TRUE!!!. I've been coerced to all the Tyler Perry flicks as well and agree. Diary of a Mad Black Woman was my favorite, but only because of Ms. Elise. Angela Bassett is in a way like Bette Davis and so it was a bit unnerving to see her "be Angela Bassett" in a Tyler Perry Flick. But after suffering through Madea's Family Reunion, I still say it was the WORST movie he's done. It was just ridiculous, overdone and unrealistic from beginning to end. And as for Rick Fox, he just fits Perry's "type" of the fairer skinned/light redboned tall brotha. I'll leave that at that.

Tyler is the black version of Woody Allen in terms of his appeal(not the quality of movies). People either really like him, or they really hate him and rarely is their middle ground. I kind of liked Why Did I Get Married, but the rest are just aight.

I've never seen any of Perry's films, and your review will ensure that I don't see this one.

When I've asked Perry devotees what keeps them coming back they seem almost embarrassed--not by their answer but by the fact that they don't quite have one.

Near as I can tell, a lot of blacks feel a sense of obligation to support films that are designated 'black movies,' with no real thought given to whether or not they're good or even serviceable.
