We Don't Believe You/You Need More People.

But Obama, being all about that bridge-building, delivered Senate speeches with this as his intro, so maybe we shouldn’t question his hip-hop bona fides too tough.

I must admit that the idea of Obama nodding his head all hard to “I Know” totally trips me out: “She wants that old thing back. She wants those heroin tracks…”

    *That* American Gangster CD? Wow.

  • ‘Ask Bill he don’t want it with O/NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!’

  • You’re such a hater! Y’all know he watches that ’99 Problems’ video when he’s alone.

    Jay-Z? Man who doesn’t like Jay-Z nowadays? I don’t believe him.

On Stuff White People like, there’s an entry that says something like “whenever someone asks who you’re favorite artist is, always say Mos Def”. Our favorite senator seems to playing a similar popularity game with his peeps by dropping a Jay-Z reference. Safe pick but doesn’t really support his claim that he’s into conscious hip hop.

Now if he would hit the interviewer with Immortal Technique or The Coup, THAT would have impressed me.

  • First off all, Obama is in the age range where he could conceivably be a hip hop fan. Hip hop is over 30 years old so, I’m sure he is aware of SOME of the music. He mentioned Nickelodeon in another conversation as he has two young daughters, something that the older candidates may not be aware of…TRUST me he is current. Bill Maher even made note of Obama’s youth and awareness. But we must really put a stop to this hip hop allegiance/litmus test that must be given to people. “Oprah doesn’t like hip hop” or “Obama isn’t to be believed” SOME (not all, the music that is NOT exposed) of the current hip hop is tantamount to minstrelsy and we need to start calling it out for that….it is no longer the artform that it once was….it is what it is.
