There are tons of students in the Univ. of California system who are undocumented immigrants, which means their educations are fraught with all manner of quotidian indignities. UCLA’s Daily Bruin took a look at the lives of some of the students trying to get an education — when they can’t get jobs on the books or any kind of government aid.

A while back, the always-very-good This American Life told the heartbreaking story of Martha, an undocumented student at UCLA who gets good grades. She loses her resolve toward the tail end of her senior year when she comes to grips with the fact that there’s no way she’ll be able to realize her dream to be a doctor without any aid. (Martha’s story begins at the 46:35 mark).

The Dream Act would help Martha out a lot, but as reporter Douglas McGray says, the bill keeps getting bogged down in immigration politics.
